Placing Bets Beyond the Line of Fate
Candrani Yulis

Recipient of the second edition of the +E Program, Candrani Yulis presents her installation Placing Bets Beyond the Line of Fate at the 18th Lyon Biennale, at Les Grandes Locos.

The second edition of the +E program

The +E Program aims to foster artistic emergence and support the recognition of women on the international contemporary art scene.

For this second edition, Indonesian curator and art historian Farah Wardani accompanies Candrani Yulis in the development of an original work, shaped by several months of research and production between Yogyakarta and France.

The artist presents her installation from September 19 to December 13, 2026, at Les Grandes Locos, as part of the 18th Lyon Biennale.

An installation at the crossroads of the spiritual and the social

With Placing Bets Beyond the Line of Fate, Candrani Yulis explores the shifting meanings of the hijab and the tensions between spiritual identity, social norms, individual expression, and consumer culture in contemporary Indonesia.

Composed of several hundred hijabs suspended from a nearly nine-metre-long sinuous metal structure, the installation draws inspiration from the Javanese naga, a figure traditionally associated with the protection of sacred spaces and the passage between the physical and spiritual worlds. By bringing this ancestral figure into dialogue with an object at the heart of contemporary society, the artist examines the transformation of symbols between heritage, belief, and modernity.
