A graduate of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta, her research is rooted in a reflection on personal narratives, collective memory and the place of women within Indonesian society.
Through an autoethnographic approach nourished by her own lived experience, the artist questions the norms and values inherent to the Muslim community in which she was raised.
Intimacy, memory and social standards
Her practice addresses themes such as morality, sexuality and the commodification of religion, revealing the tensions that exist between intimate subjectivity and collective construction. By mobilising various media, Candrani Yulis creates sensitive spaces where individual experiences become tools for analysing contemporary social structures.
Her works give form to narratives that are often silenced or rendered invisible, while opening a critical dialogue around notions of identity, domination and freedom.
