Candrani Yulis at the Institut Français d’Indonésie
The IFI presents the first public presentation of the work of Candrani Yulis, recipient of the second edition of the +E Program, ahead of her participation in the 18th Lyon Biennale.
A first public milestone before the Lyon Biennale
As part of the second edition of the +E Program, ellipse art projects and the Institut français d’Indonésie (IFI) present Passage, a solo exhibition by Indonesian artist Candrani Yulis, curated by Farah Wardani.
Presented in Yogyakarta from 14 to 24 July 2026, the exhibition brings together a selection of recent works alongside the research currently informing the production of a new installation commissioned through the +E Program. Conceived as the first public chapter of the artist’s journey, Passage precedes the presentation of her new work at the 18th Lyon Biennale, from 19 September 2026 to 3 January 2027.
Hosted by the Institut français d’Indonésie as part of Jogja Art Week, the exhibition reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to supporting emerging artistic practices and strengthening cultural dialogue between Indonesia and France.
An artistic practice between memory, belief and identity
Working across installation, video and image, Candrani Yulis develops an autoethnographic practice rooted in lived experience. Her work explores the relationships between memory, identity and social norms, examining the role of women within contemporary Indonesian society.
Drawing on archival research, everyday objects and symbolic imagery, she investigates the tensions between intimate narratives, belief systems and collective constructions. Rather than offering definitive answers, her works invite viewers to question inherited representations and reconsider the social and cultural frameworks that shape our understanding of the world.
Curated by Farah Wardani, Passage highlights the dialogue developed throughout the mentorship, revealing the research process that underpins the artist’s evolving practice before its international presentation in Lyon.
