Bhinneka Tunggal Ika

Using drawing, printing and installation on wood surfaces, Maharani Mancanagara creates a fictional narrative depicting the past and current socio-political difficulties her country has faced and still faces.

The artist also draws her inspiration from her own family story. Enthused by her grandfather’s private diary, Maharani Mancanagara has achieved immersing the viewer in the history of Indonesia’s independence by creating a semi-fictional reconstruction.

An intimate tale of Indonesian history

Through her creations, the young woman proves that history, beyond what we learn at school, resides in everyone’s memories. In this way, Maharani Mancanagara invests past objects with which she identifies, hoping to reach a public with a similar experience who would recognize themselves in her works of art
