For its first edition, the ellipse Prize was committed to the emerging creativity of Senegal by dedicating the call for applications to African visual artists residing in the territory.
The call for applications was open from April 1 to May 15, 2021 and the theme was “Futurology“:
The aim is to question the world as it is today by blending artistic thought with other areas of reflection relating to lifestyles and the evolution of societies.
Urban life, the relationship between individuals, new technologies, the environment, etc. are subjects of exploration that can be described using elements from everyone’s heritage, past and present, to evoke the future.
As part of this first initiative, the ellipse Prize was dedicated to the emerging scene of Senegal, a vibrant canvas that blends tradition and modernity, cultural heritage and contemporary expression. Dynamic and full of vitality, the latter testifies to the richness and creative diversity of the region.
36 applications were received as part of this edition including five finalists selected by an independent selection committee. Ibrahima Ndome, member of the Atelier Ndokette collective, was named winner.
The artist benefited from his first solo show, in France, during the AKAA – Also Known As Africa fair from November 11 to 14, 2021 in Paris.
A three-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts, including accommodation and studio, as well as a grant amounting €5,000 were awarded to the artist to enable his exhibition project.
A communication campaign was dedicated to the artist through ellipse art projects channels, his press agency and those of the AKAA event.
During his artistic residency in Paris, the artist produced new artworks which were exhibited and sold at the AKAA international art fair.
Each year, the ellipse Prize jury also rewards 4 finalists for their work.
